Introduction:

The Master iPad is a specific setup that optimize the capacity of a multi iPads POS to synchronize orders and print ticket during rush hours. It is especially useful when multiple iPads perform many actions at the same time (adding products, sending information to kitchen, payments, printing tickets...).

In this setup, an iPad is designated as the Master iPad. All others iPads become Linked iPads.

  • Only the Master iPad is connected to the printers. If any Linked iPads send a printing request (like a kitchen ticket or a receipt), the request is sent to the Master iPad through the local network, which in turn send the printing request to the designated printer.

  • Synchronization between the iPads is done through the local network.
All the iPads communicate with the Master iPad and the Master sends the information back to the linked iPads → Synchronization is therefore faster than before when the iPads communicated directly with the back office in order to be all synchronized.

The Master iPad setup guarantees that 100% of the printing requests and actions coming from 100% of the iPads will be printed and synchronized no matter what, even in a rush hour, printing heavy environment.

Setting up the Master iPad, the Printers and the linked iPads:

To activate the Master iPad Module, you have to ask your Customer Success Manager contact to activate the Master Printer module on your store.

Disconnect your iPads from the App:

  • Configuration ⚙️  > Disconnect.

  • Kill the App by pressing two times fast the home button of the iPad and slide the App up in order to close it.

Make sure on your Back Office that your iPads are well disconnected:

  • Back Office > Configuration > Your Devices

  • If not, disconnect all your devices by clicking in the “disconnect” green button.

Set up the Master iPad:

Log into the iPad you have designated as the Master iPad.
Remember that this iPad must remain on, plugged in, fixed and with the Tiller app in the foreground permanently.”

Upon the Device Selection pop-up, select the Device with the “Master iPad” mention.

On the configuration page ⚙️, go to “Information”.

Verify the version of the iPad⇒ All iPads need to be in the same iOS and SumUp version in order to prevent conflicts.
Having the last iOS ad SumUp version is strongly recommended.

Then click on “Permissions” and allow all permissions there ⇒ This step is very important to ensure that the connection between the devices on the local network works properly.

Set up the Printers :

On the Master iPad, go to Configuration ⚙️ > Devices

Connect all your printers to the Master iPad and designate the roles for each printer as usual.
If the printers are already set up correctly, check the printing by running the print tests and don't forget to disconnect the Bluetooth printers from the linked iPads.

Set up the Linked iPads :

On each other iPads ⇒ the Linked iPads:

  • Log into the Linked iPad

Upon Device Selection Popup, select any available Devices without the “Master iPad” mention.

On the configuration page ⚙️, go to “Information”.

Exactly as you proceeded with the Master iPad, verify the version of the iPad⇒ All iPads need to be in the same iOS and SumUp version in order to prevent conflicts.
Having the last iOS ad SumUp version is strongly recommended.

Then click on “Permissions” and allow all permissions there ⇒ This step is very important to ensure that the connection between the devices on the local network works properly.

⚠️ Note that the printers can only be configured from the Master iPad, so all the linked iPads will have the same printer configuration.

Here is what you should have on the linked iPads device’s tab:

If needed, on every linked iPad, you can print the till receipts on a different printer than the one defined on the Master iPad.

You can change the configuration of the linked iPads in the tab “Devices” and indicate where you want the till receipts/notes from that iPad to be printed.

Verify that the Master iPad, the Linked iPads and the Printers are all connected :

  • Make sure that the Master iPad and the Linked iPads are all connected to the same network

  • Make sure the Master iPad and the Printers are either all connected to the same network (in case of LAN Printers) or connected through Bluetooth (in case of Bluetooth printers)

In the Master iPad > Configuration (⚙️) > Devices:

  • You should see the list of all the Linked iPads with the “Connected” connection status

  • You should see the list of all the Printers with the “Connected” connection Status and their attributed roles

  • Log into each Linked iPad

In the Linked iPad > Configuration (⚙️) > Devices:

  • You should see the Master iPad with the “Connected” connection status

If you are using Payment Terminals :

  • Set up the Payment Terminals on each individual iPads the way you are setting them up usually.

If you are an Italian user using the Fiscal Printer :

  • Set up the Fiscal Printer on the Master iPad the same way as a classic printer

Manage sessions on the Master iPad:

With this set up, the way to open/close the till has been improved. Those improvements limit synchronization errors (e.g., a payment made on one iPad that doesn’t appear on another iPad) creating errors in tills, orders, reports etc…

The opening of the till has to be done ONLY on the Master iPad:

- Master iPad:

- Linked iPad:

The Linked iPads cannot open the till. They have to enter a Session in order to be connected to the Master iPad.
To open a new Session, you only have to click on the blue button “Start session”:

Once a linked iPad is no longer in use, the session on that iPad must be exited.
In this way, all the data from the linked iPad is synchronized with the Master iPad, it also ensures that the correct information is sent to all the other iPads, so they are all up to date.

To exit the session:  Configuration ⚙️ > Till management > Close session

Closing the till can ONLY be done on the iPad Master > The procedure is exactly the same as usual.

When closing the till, the iPad Master detects all the iPads that were connected and in use and checks that all the sessions are closed so that the till can be closed without any synchronization error.

If a linked iPad has not closed its session:

The iPad Master detects the iPads that stills have their session open.
They will appear in red on Master iPad’s screen:

You have to disconnect all sessions on all linked iPad in order to close the till.

You can force the session closing by clicking on the button “force close session”, but you take the risk that some data will not be synchronized (this option should only be used in case of blocking issue: broken iPad for example)

Once all sessions are closed, the iPad Master detects that all iPads have closed their session:

You can close the till with peace of mind, without any synchronization error.

If you can’t reach a Linked iPad which is still in session:

You can force closing the iPad session using the “Force Close Session” link. Keep in mind that by doing this, all non-synced data on this linked iPad will be definitely lost.
